Situated in an area that was once the ancient ‘Ivory Route’, linking Mozambique and Zululand, Tembe Elephant Park is renowned for having the largest elephants in Africa – and the planet! The park’s location is very remote, lying deep in the sand forests and wetlands in northern Tongaland. It borders between KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique. Along with viewing these gentle giants, you can also spot the rest of the “Big Five” : lions, leopards, black and white rhinos and buffalo.

It starts as a wonderfully peaceful elephant drinking scene… and then the zebras arrive.Two zebras begin fighting at the water’s edge, and the confrontation quickly intensifies. One bites at the other’s leg, sending it tumbling down into the water as the elephants look on. The commotion clearly gets the elephants’ attention, and a burst of trumpeting brings an unforgettable end to an already chaotic waterhole moment.
This nervous black-backed jackal really wants a drink - there’s just one small problem: the elephants are already there. After cautiously edging closer, the jackal finally works up the courage to grab a quick drink. It doesn’t last long. One elephant sends a spray of water in its direction and the jackal decides that’s quite enough bravery for one day.
Kukuokeli is trying to enjoy a drink, but her cubs have much more energetic plans. While mum hydrates, the youngsters tumble and play nearby, turning a quiet water stop into their own little playground.

A baboon troop settles in for a relaxed grooming session while one baby stays close to its mother and enjoys a drink. It is multitasking, baboon style.
For a few tense moments, it looks as though an encounter is inevitable. But instead of attacking, the leopard simply watches the porcupine continue on its way before settling back down to rest. It's a perfect reminder that predators don't chase every opportunity. Porcupines are well defended with sharp quills, and for a leopard, avoiding a potentially painful injury can be the wisest choice.
Two rhinos come together after dark for a night time sparring session. They go horn to horn, pushing and testing one another in the darkness before the interaction eventually settles.
